Relaxed, Simple & Fresh, Geraldton’s Ocean West Has It All

Ocean West Geraldton

I have to say that when we arrived into the town of Geraldton, about 400km north of Perth, were we a little fed up.

We’d just encountered about 5 days of incredibly high winds on our journey south along West Australia’s coastline, which when you’re (trying) to sleep in a tent on top of your roof with little to no protection, is not that fun.

So let’s just say we were a little jaded and little grouchy when we drove towards Geraldton’s Ocean West – a set of holiday apartment situated just out of town, along a stretch of magnificent coastline.

From the moment we walked into the reception area however, our moods instantly lifted.

Behind the reception desk was Minnie, Owner and General Manager of Geraldton’s Ocean West and her positive, bright and incredibly attitude was just the tonic we needed.

She had very kindly invited us to stay at the apartments and despite there only being 3 of us, Minnie had reserved us a huge 3-bedroom apartment in a prime position right at the front of the property.

Just this little gesture, already belies a little of Minnie’s, and her husband Dean’s, incredible hospitality.

Their fresh and friendly attitude was all-encompassing and going that extra mile in every direction, they could not have done more for us during our stay.

From local tips about town to even extending our time with them by a night, they’ve certainly set the benchmark for customer service and anywhere we stay subsequently is going to have a hard time living up to it!

With such a delightful atmosphere, we knew instantly we were going to enjoy our stay at Geraldton’s Ocean West and if we were ever glad to get out of the wind, it was certainly when we saw the beautiful apartment Minnie has reserved for us!

With 3 bedrooms, a fully-equipped kitchenette, bathroom, separate toilet and lounge-diner, the place was huge, immaculately clean and very well-equipped.

From a flat-screen TV, to comfy sofas, washing machine, a range of mini beauty products, soft towels and free tea and coffee supplies, Geraldton’s Ocean West gave us all the creature comforts we could need.

We also had a little patio area, delightful for sitting outside, as well as free communal BBQs, a swimming pool and even wifi – free and high speed of course.

For us, this was like a weekend in heaven and we were thrilled!

5 ESSENTIAL PACKING ITEMS FOR AUSTRALIA

#1 Good Camera – You will be pretty much snapping non-stop in Australia and will need a good camera to do this gorgeous country justice. I highly recommend the Sony A6000, which I use for all my travels and love, not least because it’s light, compact and robust!

#2 Good Walking Shoes – There will be a lot of walking in Australia – from cities to national parks! Make sure your feet are comfortable therefore with a pair of New Balance Trainers. Perfect for stylish strolling, I love mine.

#3 Good Guidebook – I’m still a massive fan of the Lonely Planet Guidebooks and do think their Australia edition is well put together.

#4 Good Water Bottle – Travelling in hot old Australia can be thirsty work, so make sure you have a metal water bottle that you can refill as you go, because tap water is drinkable… and free!

#5 Good Sun Hat – And there’s no denying you’ll need a good sun hat for protection in Australia too. In my opinion you can’t go past this Hello Sunshine one, which is both gorgeous and ideal for keeping the rays off your face.

One of the things that I liked most about Geraldton’s Ocean West, was the aesthetics of the apartment.

Unlike many other good value properties in small Australian towns, this place felt like it had been newly renovated, with a clear attention to detail and sense of care put into every detail.

Indeed, the décor was fresh, clean and modern, without being pretentious or overbearing and this perfectly suited the down to earth and comfort of the place. It was a place to good enjoy and kick off your shoes, whilst still feeling modern and new.

Inside the apartments, exposed brick, whitewashed over, gave an on-trend industrial-look edge to the property.

And this, coupled with the simple block colour furnishings and the sophisticated use of other natural materials throughout the interior helped to make the whole place feel very light, airy and spacious.

Indeed, Geraldton’s Ocean West brand themselves as being relaxed, simple and fresh and this is exactly what they are.

Perhaps the only downfall I can think to mention was that the mattresses were not the comfiest – being a little too soft for my tastes – yet in saying that, all 3 of us slept like babies for the duration of our stay, so this certainly would not deter me from visiting again.

And, with a price tag most travellers would be more than happy with, I certainly recommend it to travellers looking for a great value accommodation option.

With multiple bedrooms, free wifi, as well as a kitchen to save you money on food costs, I think these excellent-value apartments would be particularly ideal for groups or families looking to enjoy everything the great getaway destination of Geraldton offers.

This is especially true because the location of Geraldton’s Ocean West is so brilliant.

Not 5 minutes from the heart of this cute little café-filled and cultural community, the property sits right along the fantastic beach just south of the town centre.

This means whether it’s going out for dinner, going for a swim, exploring the heritage of this town or learning to kite surf, Ocean’s West is the ideal spot.

For us, rather more interested in the sedate side of things after weeks camping in the wind, we were delighted that we could easily just drive into Geraldton for a fantastic coffee and then stroll along the sand enjoying the wind in our hair, safe in the knowledge we were able to get out of it before dark.

So if it’s comfort, space, impeccable hospitality, modern facilities, excellent value and a great location you’re looking for in your Geraldton accommodation, look no further than Ocean West!

Highly recommended, this is the only place we’ll be staying next time!
