Slovenia
Not to be confused with the central European nation of Slovakia, Slovenia may sound like this country in name, but it’s actually surprisingly different.
A former Balkan state, Slovenia was the first independent nation to arise out of the collapse of former Yugoslavia, and the first of these republican nations to join the EU in 2004.
Bordering Italy, Hungary, Austria and Croatia, the small nation of Slovenia is heavily influenced by all these countries, taking a slice of each of them and melting them into its own unique blend of culture and cuisine.
A wonderfully safe and green country, Slovenia is regularly named one of the cleanest and most sustainable nations to live in Europe, and it’s not surprising.
Capital Ljubljana is the only zero waste capital in Europe and Slovenia has banned almost all single-use plastic products. Nearly 60% of the country remains covered in forest.
Boasting just a slither of coastline near the resort city of Piran, Slovenia is largely dominated by stunning countryside, alpine mountains, and fresh water rivers and lakes.
For nature lovers, hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, Slovenia is a peaceful paradise.
Most famous tourist spots include the stunning Lake Bled, with overlooking Bled Castle towering above it and the famous Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Maria, isolated on a tiny island in the middle.
Nearby Lake Bohinj, Vintgar Gorge and Triglav National Park should not be missed either.
Can you tell I highly recommend visiting Slovenia?!
