Big World Small Pockets
Yeah, so hands up if you’re never taking travel Yeah, so hands up if you’re never taking travel for granted again. 🙋‍♀️
...
Also can you name this spot in my photo?
Extra points on offer here people!
Clue: Malaysia
“Is there a place in the world that you haven’ “Is there a place in the world that you haven’t enjoyed or didn’t like?”
…
This is a great question because obviously, as a travel blogger, my job is kinda to make everywhere look great!
...
And, in a way, it’s an easy job, because the vast majority of the places in the world are wonderful! We live in an incredible and fascinating planet - one that I’m perpetually curious about and amazed by, so most places are going to impress me for one reason or another.
…
This is also helped by the fact that, for the vast majority of my travels, I get to choose where I go, which means I generally pick destinations that I feel I’m going to enjoy!
…
But I know you guys want a real answer to this question and not just the PR speel, so, here goes…. eeekk… If there was one part of the world I’d say I’m LESS of a fan of, it’s….
Southeast Asia.
…
OOOOH, controversial I know!
Because I understand this is many peoples’ favourite!
But it’s just not mine!
And while I appreciate this is a diverse region and lumping all the destinations here under one obtuse label is unfair, the point is, if you ask me to name a place I enjoyed less in the world, this is it.
…
Ok, so the huge caveat is that I haven’t been to Myanmar or Philippines (which I feel I might enjoy more) and I actually loved Vietnam (undermining my own point here), but honestly, for me, compared to the Middle East or Sub-Saharan Africa or South America or Eastern Europe, this part of the world just doesn’t float my boat nearly as much.
…
And what about you? Do you agree? Is there another part of the world you’re less keen on? 📍Hoi An, Vietnam, 2019
And probably the third most common question I get And probably the third most common question I get asked as a travel blogger is, how did I make this my full-time job?
...
And while the long answer involves rather a lot of dull information I learnt about the world of content creation, SEO and social media; the short answer is work. I worked my butt off to get my blog off the ground!
...
Starting in 2015 and finally moving into blogging full-time near the end of 2017, for the first 2 and a half years of Big World Small Pockets I worked the equivalent of 2 full-time jobs - either an actual hospitality job (which I was hustling back in Oz in those days) and then blogging 30 hrs+ on the side, or travelling full-time (madly road tripping my way around Australia in a Landrover with a rooftop tent) and uploading furiously whenever I could get wifi or a data signal.
...
My background is in theatre and writing, so when I said I barely owned a smartphone before I started blogging, you gotta believe me! I literally had never been on Twitter. Never heard of Instagram. Didn’t even know Wordpress existed. So during those first years I had to work really hard to learn everything!
...
Ok, so I didn’t have to… I wanted to.
I wanted to soooo bad.
I had a dream, a passion I knew could happen, had to happen!
...
So it might sound really twee, but honestly, when people ask me how I become a full-time travel blogger, the real answer is just hard work and belief.
...
Belief against all the odds that I could succeed, that I could live the life I dreamed about it if I grafted and yearned for it enough.
...
And now that travel has taken a big hit and the pandemic is shaking us all, I really am keeping that motto closer to my heart than ever.
...
In the current climate, where it’s so easy for pessimism to dominate, I really believe blind hope, against all the odds, as well as hard work inline with that optimistic outlook, is the recipe for future success.
...
So here’s to staying positive, keeping those dreams alive and believing everything will work out, even if it feels a long way off!
Guess what guys... I don’t have an insta husband Guess what guys... I don’t have an insta husband!
*shock horror*
Yes when I say I travel solo, I mean it and that includes taking my own pics!
...
So after saying in my last post, that the most common question I get asked (non-juicy) is how do I decide where to travel, loads of you popped up with other great common questions too.
...
And yes, another classic favourite is... “who takes your pictures when you travel alone?”
...
Answer: not other people (they always turn out so bad! 🙈)
So, in my tiny backpack, I always carry a mini gorilla tripod I can attach both my GoPro or my mirrorless Sony camera to.
I then use my phone (via the GoPro or Sony apps) as a remote control to set a timer and snap the shots from the tripod view when I’m in position!
...
Ha ha magic!
Until you’ll sometimes see my phone in the shots if you look really closely! 😉
...
I tend use to my GoPro for wide angles and the Sony for closer shots. It works ok, but it does mean I can’t go too far from the tripod as my phone remote works over Bluetooth!
...
That’s why I never have dramatic waterfall shots or those from a great distance - I can’t get them!
...
Did you know about this trick? It’s an epic one for solo travellers because trust me, you won’t lose friends over it!
📍Kazbegi, Georgia
Can you guess the number 1 question I get asked as Can you guess the number 1 question I get asked as a travel blogger? Sadly it’s not anything juicy (shame on your guys, but also respect!) because what I get asked most often is, “how do you choose where to travel?”
In other words, how do I pick the country I want to travel to next. Obvs in a pandemo situation this decision making process is a little skewed (!), but generally speaking there’s a ranking process for me. #1 Is it somewhere I haven’t been before?
#2 What’s the climate in that place at the time I want to visit (avoid rainy season, winter etc)
#3 Is the destination off the beaten track, or does it offer outdoor adventure like hiking etc that can be enjoyed affordably? As you know, I often travel overland (trying not to fly) as much as possible. Given this, I’ll usually skip between as many countries in a certain region as possible.
This means that quite often my countries of choice are simply chosen by the question “what’s nextdoor?” A mad life perhaps, but the open road of adventure knows only the boundaries you put in place. It’s certainly a lesson in how our minds impose both our greatest limitations and grant our greatest paths to freedom! What’s the wildest travel journey you’ve had? 📍Samoa
Swinging into the new year like... Thank goodness Swinging into the new year like... Thank goodness I went to soooo many countries and took soooo many photos in 2019, that’s all I can say! Pilfering the back catalogue hard! 📍Georgetown, Malaysia.
Who else has been here? 🙋‍♀️
Did you eat all the food too?!
HAPPY 2021 ALL! We’ve kicked it off with anothe HAPPY 2021 ALL! We’ve kicked it off with another full lockdown here the in the U.K... What a January treat! Honestly my UK staycation last summer (which at first looked pretty freaking low-grade compared to the epic 7 month overland adventure I had planned to Central Asia and back) is now looking like the trip of a lifetime quite frankly. I mean I certainly did get to tick off some classics. Do you know what this one is? And tell me, are you in lockdown too right now?
It’s so interesting to see how different places around the world are fairing, so please let me know where you are and what the restrictions are like there... Oh and if you want to read about what went on behind the scenes in 2020, check out this post I wrote on my blog... https://www.bigworldsmallpockets.com/2020-in-review/

Please send if you have any spare.
That is all.
I love cities and I love nature, I love socialisin I love cities and I love nature, I love socialising and I love time by myself. I’m a lover of chaotic places and a lover of quiet remote corners. I can be both an extrovert and an introvert. And all of this handily means I’m happy pretty much anywhere with anyone ... or no one! Quite a good skill for a traveller I’d say. Also a good skill to surviving lockdowns unscathed!
