Netherlands
I’m going to cut to the chase here, Amsterdam is one of my favourite European cities… and I have a feeling I’m not alone!
I just don’t think you can beat a stunning spring day, wandering the canals, coffee in hand, skip in your step, everything to play for, as the world passes you by.
From those gorgeous townhouses to the terrific tulip season, Amsterdam and its surrounds just get me – is it something in the water?
On the off chance that it’s not and you want to explore further too, then I highly recommend the country’s other cities of Rotterdam and Breda, not to mention areas easily reachable from Amsterdam in a day, including the stunning coastal stretch of Zaandvort, the cheese destination of Beemster, the emerging cultural quirk of Zaans and the lilac heartland of Aalsmeer.
The perfect country for enjoying an easy (read flat!) cycle holiday, it’s best to visit the Netherlands during the summer months of June, July and August, for the chance of the driest, warmest weather.
