Falkland Islands
The Falklands Island are, without a doubt, one of the most incredible destinations I’ve ever visited!
Located off the coast of South America, not a million miles from the Antarctic Peninsula, this remote archipelago is home to under 4000 people… and a heck of a lot of wildlife.
Formed from over 700 islands, the 2 main ones – West Falkland and East Falkland (where the capital Stanley and the international airport of Mount Pleasant can be found) – are linked by a ferry service.
Outside of this, the islands are connected to each other only via a small, local flight service, called FIGAS, which acts a bit like a taxi network!
The main tourist islands to visit, beside the 2 largest, are Pebble, Carcass, Saunders, Bleaker and Sealion, which boast an astonishing array of penguin species, birdlife, sealions, seals, orcas and more!
With so few visitors and such low population density, the Falklands is one of the greatest wildlife spots on earth.
Planning and booking ahead is essential here – accommodation is so limited it’s often booked up over a year in advance.
Flights can be tricky to arrange too and wild weather can bring regular delays, so a high degree of flexibility is also required for Falklands forays.
