Strasbourg Christmas Markets Guide: Plan the Best Trip

Strasbourg Xmas Market

Strasbourg in France, is an absolute must-visit during the holiday season, especially if you’re a fan of a good festive market!

Strasbourg was the first place in France to host a Christmas market way back in 1570 — and it’s been perfecting the festive magic ever since.

With some of the oldest Christmas markets in Europe therefore, this city has been spreading Christmas cheer for centuries!

Packed with twinkling lights, cosy wooden chalets, and delicious seasonal treats, this charming Alsatian city absolutely deserves a spot on your Christmas market bucket list.

Every year, around 2 million visitors travel to the Strasbourg Xmas markets to enjoy the magical atmosphere (do don’t expect the place to yourself!)

However the beautifully decorated half-timbered houses, cobbled streets, and breathtaking Strasbourg Cathedral makes it easy to see why Strasbourg welcomes so many visitors during the festive period.

Add to this the city’s whopping 15 official Christmas markets to explore, (yes that’s right 15!) and you’ll understand exactly why the city is so popular to visit in December.

I highly recommend combining your Strasbourg visit with some time in the surrounding picturesque Alsace region (especially the Alsace wine route), where fairytale villages that are said to have inspired Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, delicious local wines, and more Christmas feels await!

So if you’re looking for the perfect winter trip, here’s all you need to know about heading to the Xmas Markets in Strasbourg, France…

Why You Should Visit the Strasbourg France Xmas Markets

France, Strasbourg, Christmas Lights

As I’ve outlined above, a Strasbourg Christmas market or two is definitely worth a place on your festive travel bucket list!

This charming and historic Alsatian city is hands down the most Christmassy spot in France, if not the whole of Europe, and walking around is honestly like being in a real-life fairytale.

You’ll love the intimate feel of Strasbourg’s Christmas market compared to the bigger options in bucket list destinations like Vienna and Paris, and the city is easy and relaxed to get around.

That said, Strasbourg is still lively and busy in places, but it’s much less hectic than some of the more crowded Christmas markets held in larger cities, especially because so much of the historic city centre here is pedestrianised.

Another bonus is that many smaller markets in Strasbourg are themed.

Offering everything from arts and crafts, to traditional toys, artisan gifts to gastronomic delights (don’t miss trying “Bredele”—traditional Christmas cookies or the exquisite tarte flambée), they are also a great place to experience different cultural and artistic local events, such as concerts, art exhibitions, and performances, which are regularly held here.

How Long to Visit Strasbourg For

France, Strasbourg, Snow

Strasbourg is a small city, but as the saying goes, “good things come in small packages!”

As the historic area of the city is spread over a limited area, it’s easy enough to walk around and view all the must-see sights in one day.

Strasbourg is also a great day trip from Paris if you’re planning a trip to the French capital in winter and want to tag on another iconic destination.

I recommend seeing the Christmas markets here at night, when the festive lights are illuminated and the atmosphere warms up even more.

To do this however, you’ll likely need to stay in Strasbourg for at least one night.

This will also give you extra time to browse the markets at a relaxed pace.

The BEST Christmas Markets in Strasbourg

France, Strasbourg, Xmas Bunting

Strasbourg holds the record for the oldest Christmas market in France and one of the oldest in Europe.

During the Middle Ages, “St Klausenmarkt” (Market of Saint Nicholas) was held on or around 6th December at Strasbourg Cathedral, where presents were given to children.

Following Strasbourg’s transition to a Protestant city in the 16th century, this market was replaced with “Christkindelsmärik” (Market of Baby Jesus), which still runs to this day at Place Broglie.

Fast-forward to modern times, and Strasbourg’s Christmas markets have grown into a must-see festive extravaganza.

Over 300 chalets are spread across 15 themed markets, many of which are very affordable, perfect for fellow budget travellers.

That said, it is important to shop around, as the more commercial options do have pricier stalls.

Here are the 6 Strasbourg Christmas markets you just can’t miss…

#1 Visit the Historic Christkindelsmärik

Located along the twinkly tree-lined stretch of Place Broglie, and near Hotel de Ville (city hall), is the historic Christkindelsmärik (Market of the Baby Jesus).

This is the OG market with probably the largest array of stalls, ranging from speciality gingerbread to beeswax candles, beautiful Christmas decorations, teddy bears and much more.

There are plenty of great food options if you get hungry here, including traditional pretzels, choucroute (sauerkraut), spaetzle (fresh noodles) and even foie gras!.

If you need an warming boost, why not enjoy a mug of “vin chaud” (mulled wine) with a drop of amaretto, which is delicious and super cheap!

Most stalls ask for a small deposit to use a mug when paying for your drink, but you’ll get this back when you return the mug at the end of your visit.

#2 Admire Strasbourg’s Great Christmas Tree at Place Kléber

Nothing gets you more in the festive mood than a highly decorated Christmas tree.

Strasbourg’s Christmas tree in Place Kleber is massive and mesmerising!

Between 4pm and 9pm (on the hour), the tree also has a light and music show, which is well worth seeing, so make sure to visit in the evening.

The nearby market offers great hand-crafted gifts, and plenty of wooden chalets with antiques and quirky items—perfect for those people in your life for who you struggle to buy presents for!

There’s also an area called Village Partage, which hosts 90 charities and offers the chance to purchase responsibly, donate to charity, and take part in community events.

Don’t miss trying a flambée baguette!

I had the Munster (mild, buttery cheese) with lardons, which was warmed until the cheese was melting and golden brown – delish!

#3 Enjoy the Quaint Carré D’Or Market

Situated at Place du Temple Neuf, this Christmas market in Strasbourg is really quaint and pretty.

Across the square, and in narrow streets leading from the cathedral up to the market, there are lots of beautiful stringed lights overhead, accented with colour-themed stars and ornaments, as well as decorated buildings all around.

Small wooden stalls fill the square, selling toys, traditional ornaments, paper stars, sweet treats and more.

#4 Christmas Markets at Strasbourg Cathedral

Several Christmas markets are dotted in and around the cathedral, almost merging into one, plus the cathedral really makes this area a special experience—almost like being on a film set!

The Place de la Cathédrale market is in front of the cathedral (west façade).

This is a busier market when, so it might be one to try earlier if you’re not a fan of crowds.

Many of the stalls are extravagantly decorated, so even a walk around is worth it, and of course, there are some great photo opportunities – hello you Instagrammers!

While you’re at the Place de la Cathédrale market, don’t miss the chance to visit the magnificent Strasbourg Cathedral too.

Here you’ll find the famous astronomical clock, which puts on a fascinating show at 12:30pm each day, and you can also climb the tall, spiral staircase to the viewing platform for incredible views over the whole historic centre.

Round the corner is the Place du Château market with a beautiful carousel and the teddy bear Christmas building nearby amid more festive stalls and shops.

The Marché aux Poissons is situated near here, too, right on the Ill River near Palais Rohan.

This is the perfect spot, with a magical Christmas market, delicious food-related gifts and fabulous wines.

Rue des Hallebardes and Rue Gutenberg also have many festive stalls selling traditional Xmas goods nearby too.

#5 Explore Village de l’Avent

The Advent Village at Square Louise Weiss is located in the Petite France area of Strasbourg and is super cute.

Traditional local products, such as jam, honey, and cheese, are sold here, and there is the opportunity to take part in workshops and crafts and enjoy concerts, dances, and performances.

This is a great market to hear Christmas carols too – talk about atmospheric!

#6 Change Things Up at “Off” Market

If conscious consumerism is your thing, then the “Off” Christmas Market in Place Grimmeissen is an interesting find in the Alsatian capital.

The market features activities, stands, and events on the theme of solidarity and respecting the environment.

It features organic and local produce and vintage thrift stalls.

You can even find your inner elf at the toy manufacturing workshop!

Visiting Strasbourg in December

France, Alsace, Strasbourg Cathedral Lightshow

The Strasbourg Christmas markets typically run from the end of November until just after Christmas Day, so there is a window of about a month to visit.

The markets are typically open from around 11.30am until 9pm, with an early finish on Christmas Eve at 6pm.

This can change slightly each year, so it’s worth double-checking the Strasbourg Christmas market dates and times before you visit.

The last week before Christmas usually attracts the biggest crowds, so going earlier or at the tail end of December is the best option if you prefer a quieter visit.

Weekends and after dark are super busy at the markets, too, so if you plan to shop, it’s best to go mid-week during the day.

Whenever you choose to visit, the Christmas season is one of the best times of year to explore Strasbourg.

Winter in Strasbourg: Weather In December

France, Strasbourg, Xmas Cookies

Strasbourg is pretty chilly in winter, with cold temperatures (average of 5.5°C), so you’ll need to wrap up.

Make sure to bundle up in warm layers to stay comfortable while exploring the markets.

Come prepared for some rain during your visit too.

If you’re lucky, you might even catch a dusting of snow, which only adds to the magical winter wonderland vibe!

Enjoy a relaxing treatment followed by the Roman baths, sauna, snow fountain, and a dip in the heated swimming pool, which is a real treat.
