In the Parks & Green Spaces
Strolling the beautiful gardens and parks of Vienna can also be another one of the top free things to do in this city.
Here’s my pick of the bunch…
Schönbrunn Imperial Gardens
If you want to get a taste of how the royals lived and where they took their walks, there is no better place than the Schönbrunn Palace Gardens.
Perfectly manicured in every season, these gardens will enchant you with their flower-adorned alleys, labyrinthine pathways, stunning fountains, and most importantly, the breathtaking view from the hilltop.
A popular spot for runners, these gardens will offer you an elegant respite from the city’s hustle and bustle.
If you like classical music, keep an eye on free concerts taking place in the garden during warmer months!
Prater – fresh air & thrill rides
Prater is perhaps Vienna’s most popular park, and for good reason.
Its 1,500 acres feature everything you can ask for: green alleys, sports centres, entertainment spots, cafes, and chill meadows where you can just bask in the sun.
If you are looking for more of a thrill, the Prater amusement park is where you want to be!
You can ride some hair-raising rollercoasters, win cheeky toys or see Vienna from above, by hopping onto the famous Giant Ferris Wheel.
Entrance to the park is free, but the rides require tickets.
Stadtpark – the city’s green oasis
Located right in the centre of the city and a short walk away from the Vienna State Opera, Stadtpark is a great place to take a breather.
In its open-air museum atmosphere, you will find beautiful statues and memorials of famous composers, including the glitzing golden statue of composer and Viennese icon Johan Strauss.
The Danube – its channel & island
If you’re interested in a different kind of open-air museum, check out the forever effervescent street art along the Danube canal.
Wandering further? Cross the Danube river to explore the expansive Danube Island.
During summer months, the island is the perfect place for taking a leisurely walk, bathing or attending concerts during the Danube Island Festival – all for free!
No wonder the island is a great place for young people and families with small children alike.
Central Cemetery – confusingly not in the centre!
Even though you’d probably have to take public transport to get here, Vienna’s Central Cemetery (Zentralfriedhof) is a great place to disconnect with a serene walk.
One of Europe’s largest cemeteries, it serves as the final resting place of many famous musicians, like Beethoven, Brahms, and Shubert.
