One of the top items I recommend for any pregnant traveller is a good pair of compression socks.
When you’re flying long-haul or sitting for extended periods, your circulation slows down, and pregnancy hormones can make swelling worse.
Compression socks help prevent fluid build-up in your legs and ankles, and they can reduce the risk of blood clots.

These small pillows tuck neatly under your belly or back and help you maintain good posture whether you’re napping on a train or resting in a hotel bed that’s just not quite right.

This is one of those items you don’t realise you need until you try one.
A good support belt relieves pressure on your lower back and pelvis, making walking, sightseeing, and even standing in airport queues a lot more bearable.

For longer trips, this can be a lifesaver, especially if you’re in your second or third trimester.
You’ll be amazed how much lighter you feel when your core muscles get that extra bit of help. Think of it as scaffolding for your bump – practical and perfectly acceptable travel kit.
Comfortable and Adjustable Shoes
When you’re pregnant, your feet can change size faster than you’d expect, thanks to water retention and a hormone called relaxin, which loosens joints and ligaments.
That’s why adjustable shoes are a must for travel.
I swear by VIVAIA Aria 5 or Skechers Go Walk trainers.
Both offer cushioned soles, arch support, and adjustable fits – plus they’re easy to slip on at airport security.
If you’re heading somewhere warm, consider sandals with adjustable straps or ergonomic soles, like Birkenstocks Arizona instead of rigid flip-flops.
The key is flexibility.
Your feet may swell during a long flight, but you still want enough support to wander cobbled streets or enjoy a gentle coastal walk without pain.
Reusable Water Bottle and Hydration Helpers
Hydration is critical when travelling while pregnant.
Dehydration can trigger headaches, fatigue, and even Braxton Hicks contractions.
A large, refillable water bottle is therefore a simple but essential piece of gear.
I like the Chilly’s Bottle&for its double insulation and leak-proof design – it keeps drinks cold for up to 24 hours, which is ideal when travelling to warmer destinations.
Pair it with electrolyte sachets that are safe for pregnancy (always check with your midwife first) to help replace lost minerals, especially if you’re travelling somewhere hot.
If you’re travelling to a destination where the tap water might not be up to scratch, then don’t take any chances and get yourself a Water-to-Go bottle.

Airport Tip: Keep your bottle empty for security and refill it once you’re through. Most major UK airports now have free water refill stations.

For those who struggle with nausea, especially in the first trimester, a few simple aids can make travel much smoother.
Acupressure wristbands, such as Sea-Bands, work by stimulating pressure points that help reduce sickness. Many women find them effective for morning sickness as well as motion sickness.
Ginger chews or ginger tea sachets are another easy addition to your carry-on bag.
If your symptoms are stronger, speak with your GP before you travel – there are pregnancy-safe, anti-nausea medications that can make all the difference on long flights or bumpy roads.
Even if you’re feeling fine before take-off, it’s worth keeping a few of these aids close at hand. The combination of turbulence, heat, and food smells can hit unexpectedly!
Layerable Clothing and a Versatile Scarf
Pregnancy can play havoc with your internal thermostat.
One moment you’re freezing, the next you’re too warm.
That’s why layering is your best friend when travelling.
Opt for breathable fabrics such as cotton, bamboo, or modal, which wick moisture and allow airflow.
A lightweight wrap or shawl is especially versatile – it can act as a blanket on planes, a cover-up for naps, or even a makeshift pillow.
I’ve travelled with the same large scarf for years and wouldn’t dream of leaving it behind!
Comfortable maternity leggings or maternity jeans paired with a long tunic make a great travel outfit that balances practicality and style.
Avoid anything too tight around the waist, especially on longer journeys.
