Top Tbilisi Day Trips: See the Best of Georgia

Top Tbilisi Day Trips

If you’re planning a trip to Georgia’s capital, then adding a few Tbilisi day trips into your itinerary is an absolute must.

One of the best things about Tbilisi is its location. Sitting almost in the centre of the country, the city gives you easy access to mountains, monasteries, wine regions, Soviet history and even semi-desert landscapes, all within a few hours.

As a budget traveller from the UK, I found Georgia incredibly easy to explore independently.

Marshrutkas are cheap, organised tours are affordable, and many of the country’s most incredible sights cost very little to visit.

From sipping wine in Kakheti to hiking around Kazbegi and exploring ancient cave cities, these are the best Tbilisi day trips worth adding to your Georgia itinerary.

Why Tbilisi Makes a Great Base in Georgia

Georgia, Tbilisi, Me Looking Out Over City

Georgia is surprisingly compact, which makes many major attractions reachable within a day.

Public transport is cheap, roads are improving and organised tours are excellent value compared to western Europe.

You can also mix independent travel with group tours depending on the destination. Places like Mtskheta and Gori are easy solo trips, while destinations such as David Gareja are far simpler with a tour or driver.

Mtskheta: Georgia’s Spiritual Heart

Georgia, Mtskheta, River

One of the easiest and most rewarding Tbilisi day trips is Mtskheta.

Just 30 minutes from the capital, this UNESCO-listed city was once the ancient capital of Georgia and remains the spiritual centre of the country today.

Why Visit Mtskheta

The city is famous for its beautiful churches, river views and deep religious significance.

The main highlight is Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, one of Georgia’s most important religious buildings and believed to contain the robe of Christ according to Georgian Orthodox tradition.

Nearby Jvari Monastery sits dramatically on a hilltop overlooking the confluence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers.

Even if you’re not religious, the scenery alone makes this one of the best Tbilisi day trips.

How to Get There

The easiest option is a marshrutka from Didube Station.

Journey time: around 30 minutes
Cost: roughly 2 GEL each way

You can also join a half-day tour combining Mtskheta with Chronicle of Georgia and Jvari Monastery.

Budget Tips

Entry to the churches is free.

Avoid overpriced restaurants near the cathedral and walk a few streets back for cheaper khinkali and lobio.

Kazbegi: Ultimate Mountain Escape

Georgia, Kazbegi, Me with Gergeti Trinity Church

If you only do one full-day adventure from Tbilisi, make it Kazbegi.

Officially known as Stepantsminda, Kazbegi sits deep in the Caucasus Mountains along the Georgian Military Highway.

This region delivers snow-capped peaks, dramatic valleys and one of the most iconic churches in eastern Europe.

Why Kazbegi is Special

The star attraction is Gergeti Trinity Church, perched high above the town with Mount Kazbek towering behind it.

The journey there is part of the experience too.

Along the route you’ll pass:

  • Jinvali Reservoir
  • Ananuri Fortress
  • Gudauri ski resort
  • Russia-Georgia Friendship Monument

It’s honestly one of the most scenic drives I’ve ever done.

How to Get There

DIY travellers can take a marshrutka from Didube Station.

Journey time: 3.5 to 4 hours
Cost: around 15 GEL each way

However, because the road itself contains so many sights, I actually think a guided tour offers better value here.

Many day tours include all major stops plus transport to Gergeti Church.

What to Expect

This is a very long day.

Expect 10 to 12 hours total.

If you have extra time, staying overnight is far better, especially if you want to hike.

Kakheti: Georgia’s Wine Region

Georgia, Kakheti, Sighnaghi

No list of Tbilisi day trips would be complete without Kakheti.

Georgia claims to be the birthplace of wine, with winemaking traditions dating back around 8,000 years.

And honestly? Even as someone who normally travels on a tight budget, Kakheti was absolutely worth splashing out on.

Why Visit Kakheti

Kakheti combines rolling vineyards, hilltop monasteries, incredible food and beautiful old towns.

The most popular stop is Sighnaghi, often nicknamed the “City of Love”.

This charming hilltop town features cobbled streets, colourful balconies and panoramic views over the Alazani Valley.

Many tours also include Bodbe Monastery, associated with Saint Nino who brought Christianity to Georgia.

Wine Tasting in Kakheti

Most tours include multiple wine tastings, often alongside traditional Georgian bread and cheese.

Expect to try:

  • Saperavi
  • Rkatsiteli
  • Mtsvane

Georgia’s traditional qvevri winemaking method, where wine ferments in clay vessels buried underground, is recognised by UNESCO.

How to Get There

Public transport exists, but for wine tasting it makes far more sense to join a group tour.

Budget-friendly tours start from around £13 to £20 depending on inclusions.

Budget Tips

Don’t buy wine at the first winery stop.

Prices are often cheaper in Tbilisi supermarkets and wine shops.

David Gareja: Georgia’s Desert Monastery

Georgia, David Gareja, Rock Monasteries

David Gareja was one of the most fascinating places I visited in Georgia.

Unlike the lush mountains most people associate with the country, this area feels wild, remote and almost lunar.

Located near the Azerbaijan border, the monastery complex dates back to the 6th century.

Why David Gareja is Special

The setting alone is extraordinary.

The monastery sits within a semi-desert landscape of rolling hills and rocky ridges.

Historically, it was one of Georgia’s most important monastic centres.

Parts of the complex stretch across the border into Azerbaijan, which has occasionally caused access restrictions over the years.

What to Do There

The main monastery area remains active today.

You can wander through ancient caves, chapels and courtyards built directly into the rock.

Some hiking routes also lead up to ridge viewpoints overlooking Azerbaijan.

How to Get There

Public transport is difficult.

Most travellers either:

  • Join a day tour
  • Hire a driver
  • Rent a car

Tours generally cost between 40 and 80 GEL depending on group size and inclusions.

Important Tips

Bring water and sun protection.

There is very little shade and temperatures can get extremely hot in summer.

Also check current border access before visiting, as hiking routes occasionally close.

Gori & Uplistsikhe: Soviet History Meets Ancient Civilisation

Georgia, Uplistsikhe, Rock Churches

This combination makes one of the most interesting historical Tbilisi day trips.

Gori is famously the birthplace of Stalin, while nearby Uplistsikhe is an ancient cave city dating back thousands of years.

The contrast between the two is genuinely fascinating.

Visiting Gori

The Stalin Museum remains one of the city’s main attractions.

Inside you’ll find exhibits, photographs, Stalin’s childhood home and even his private railway carriage.

It’s a strange, slightly surreal place that offers insight into Soviet history.

Exploring Uplistsikhe

Around 15 minutes away lies Uplistsikhe.

This ancient rock-hewn settlement contains tunnels, halls, wine cellars and pagan temples carved directly into cliffs.

The site dates back to the early Iron Age and once sat along major Silk Road trade routes.

How to Get There

Marshrutkas from Didube Station run frequently to Gori.

Journey time: 1.5 hours
Cost: around 10 GEL

From Gori, taxis to Uplistsikhe are inexpensive.

Alternatively, many tours combine both destinations.

Borjomi: Mineral Water & Forest Walks

Borjomi is ideal if you want a slower-paced escape from Tbilisi.

This spa town became famous across the Soviet Union for its mineral water.

Why Visit Borjomi

Borjomi Central Park is lovely for walking, especially in summer.

You can taste the naturally carbonated mineral water directly from the spring.

Spoiler alert: it definitely tastes healthier than it tastes delicious.

The surrounding Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park also offers excellent hiking.

How to Get There

Trains and marshrutkas both connect Tbilisi and Borjomi.

Journey time: around 2.5 hours
Cost: 10 to 20 GEL

Budget Tips

Stay away from tourist cafés near the park entrance.

Local bakeries offer much cheaper snacks and khachapuri.

Mestia: Better as a Multi-Day Trip

Georgia, Svaneti, Mestia

You’ll often see Mestia included in lists of Tbilisi day trips, but honestly, this isn’t realistic.

Mestia sits in the remote Svaneti region in north-west Georgia and deserves far more than a rushed day.

Why Mestia is Incredible

This is one of the most spectacular mountain regions in the Caucasus.

The area is famous for:

  • Medieval Svan towers
  • Glacier hikes
  • Dramatic mountain scenery
  • Traditional Svan culture

How to Get There

From Tbilisi you can:

  • Fly
  • Take an overnight train plus marshrutka
  • Drive

But travel times are long.

If possible, allow at least 3 to 5 days.

Budget Advice

The overnight train from Tbilisi to Zugdidi plus marshrutka onward is the cheapest route.

Dashbashi Canyon & Diamond Bridge

One of Georgia’s newer tourist attractions, Dashbashi Canyon has become popular thanks to its dramatic glass bridge suspended over the canyon.

What to Expect

The scenery here is stunning.

You’ll find waterfalls, forest trails and the controversial but undeniably impressive Diamond Bridge attraction.

How to Get There

Most visitors join organised day tours from Tbilisi.

Tours often combine the canyon with lakes and forest stops.

Best Ways to Travel on Tbilisi Day Trips

Georgia, Tbilisi, River

Marshrutkas

Georgia’s shared minibuses are the cheapest option.

They’re fast, affordable and surprisingly easy once you get used to them.

Downside? Limited English and no online timetables.

Organised Tours

Honestly excellent value in Georgia.

Many include transport, guide services and multiple stops for under £20.

They’re especially useful for:

  • Kakheti
  • David Gareja
  • Kazbegi

Private Drivers

Great for flexibility if travelling in a group.

Typical costs range from $50 to $120 per car depending on distance.
