Not every overnight stay comes with timber beams older than Shakespeare and World War Two graffiti carved by American airmen – but The Swan Hotel in Lavenham does.
This half-timbered beauty has stood proudly for over 500 years, and today it’s not only one of the most historic hotels in the UK, but also, wonderfully, dog-friendly.
From treats at the bar to cosy dog-friendly rooms, it offered an ideal stay, where my four-legged travel companion got to enjoy the adventure right alongside me.

Lavenham – From Riches to Rags
Driving into Lavenham feels a bit like stepping onto the set of a period drama – crooked timber-framed houses, and wonderfully preserved medieval charm can be seen in every direction.
This is no accident – thanks to the boom of the wool trade, Lavenham was once one of the wealthiest villages in England during the 15th and early 16th centuries, when high-quality Lavenham Blue broadcloth (dyed using plants imported from France), became incredibly sought after across Europe.
The resulting prosperity paid for the grand timber-framed houses and impressive church still seen in Lavenham today – preserved across the centuries due to the high buildings standards afforded by the once-wealthy villagers.
However, after trading routes with France were cut off due to Henry’s VII’s antics in 1534, Lavenham’s precious blue cloth production quickly ceased and the village fell into a centuries-long impoverished decline.
This tragic chapter also played its part in Lavenham’s preservation – no one could afford to knock down the grand Tudor buildings and replace them, so they remained.
And right in the heart of this almost-timeless village, is one of the grandest Medieval buildings – The Swan Hotel – a glorious 15th-century coaching inn over 500 years old.
From the moment I arrived I knew this wasn’t just another hotel stay – this was going to be an experience!
Quirky Historic Hotel at Every Turn
The Swan wears its history proudly.
From sloping floors and wonky beams to centuries-old fireplaces, it feels like every corner has a story to tell.
One of the quirkiest details is the Airmen’s Bar, where American servicemen based nearby during WWII, used to gather. Many of them carved their names and squadron numbers into the walls – and you can still see those etchings today.
It’s a moving reminder of the hotel’s place in history, and one of those little touches that makes staying here truly memorable.
Indeed its the blend of quirky historic features and modern comfort that makes The Swan so special.
While the rooms are full of character, they’re also cosy, beautifully furnished, and equipped with everything you’d want for a relaxing stay.
Our night in the enormous Gainsborough Suite, complete with separate lounge, bedroom and bathroom with a bath, was an absolute treat for the 3 of us.
Dog-Friendly Comforts
And I say 3, because Gibbles McNibbles thoroughly enjoyed his trip to The Swan Hotel too!
Travelling with a dog can sometimes be a challenge, but The Swan made it incredibly easy.
From the warm welcome we received from all the staff, to the thoughtful touches in the room – think dog bed, water bowl and treat pack complete with toy and snacks – Gibbles felt just as looked after as we did.
Our dog-friendly rooms was incredibly spacious and comfortable, with easy access walks around the stunning village just minutes from the door..
Best of all, dogs are welcome in the lounge and certain dining areas of the hotel too, so you don’t have to worry about leaving them behind while you enjoy your stay.
There was even a sausage on offer at breakfast – which Gibbles woofed down!
It’s these little details that make a big difference, turning a good stay into a truly great one.
Dining at The Swan – A Foodie Highlight
Food is always an important part of a UK getaway, and The Swan didn’t disappoint, with three dining options to choose from: the relaxed Airmen’s Bar for hearty classics, the Mess Call 487 for relaxed, dog-friendly dining, and the more refined Gallery Restaurant, set under soaring Tudor beams, for a more luxurious experience.
All the menus celebrate local Suffolk produce, with fresh, seasonal dishes and plenty of vegetarian options that were as delicious as they were beautifully presented.
Dinner was a real highlight – I went for burrata to start, followed by a huge chickpea tagine, with my meat-loving partner opted for scallops followed by succulent lamb with dauphinoise potatoes, while our dog snoozed happily at my feet.
Breakfast the next morning was just as impressive, with everything from full English to smashed avocado served at the table and a selection of lighter continental options also available from the buffet.
Time to Relax – The Weavers’ House Spa
After exploring Lavenham’s crooked streets, it was then time to treat ourselves to some downtime at the Weavers’ House Spa, just a few steps from the main hotel.
This cosy, intimate spa – included in most guest packages – offers a range of treatments, from relaxing massages to revitalising facials, with a steam, sauna, and vitality pool for added pampering.
The outdoor and indoor relaxation areas only add to this a little haven of calm, putting an extra layer of indulgence onto a stay at The Swan.
Exploring Lavenham
Of course, no trip here would be complete without exploring the village of Lavenham itself.
With over 300 listed buildings, including the impressive National Trust-run Guildhall, volunteer-run Little Hall and St Peter and St Paul’s Church, it feels like a living museum.
It’s also a great base for dog walks, with countryside trails just beyond the village.
We spent the afternoon strolling the forest trails and old railway paths of the Lavenham Woodland Walk before stopping in for a drink at one of the lovely local pubs.
Why The Swan is So Special
What really sets The Swan apart is the combination of its rich history, warm hospitality, and modern comforts – all wrapped up in one dog-friendly package.
The staff go out of their way to make you feel at home, whether that’s offering recommendations on local walks, bringing over a water bowl for your pup, or just greeting you with a smile.
The hotel manages to be luxurious without ever feeling stuffy, historic without feeling outdated, and welcoming whether you’re a solo traveller, couple, or bringing along your four-legged friend.
As someone who’s stayed in countless hotels across the UK, I can honestly say The Swan Hotel in Lavenham is one of the most unique experiences I’ve ever had.
Lavenham’s medieval magic is unforgettable, and The Swan was the perfect place for both us humans and pooches to experience it from.
