Amazing Beaches in Malta

Malta, Beach, Sunset

Malta is not famous for its beaches, but there are some breathtakingly beautiful gems you just can’t miss.

As a rocky island, most of the beaches are small coves, often stony, but all posses a unique charm.

What is amazing about the beaches on the island of Malta is their crystal clear water and scenic views out to sea, so don’t discount a good beach trip when you visit this wonderful Mediterranean island…

#1 Golden Bay Beach

Location: Northwest Coast

A top Malta beach, let’s kick things off with one of island’s most popular coastal spots – Golden Bay.

Famous for its wide curve of orange-gold sand, calm, dark blue waters, easy access, and family-friendly atmosphere, there’s plenty of space to lay out a towel here, plus there are multitude of water sports on offer too.

Some restaurants overlook the bay for a quick bite with a view at lunch or in the evening.

If you do choose to visit later in the afternoon and stay until the evening, you’ll be able to catch one of Malta’s best sunsets too.

Otherwise, if you get there early in the morning, you’ll be able to get a good spot before most others arrive.

#2 Għajn Tuffieħa Beach

Location: Northwest Coast

If you’re looking for a quieter alternative to some of Malta’s busier beaches, Għajn Tuffieħa, just a short walk from Golden Bay, is your answer.

The soft sand here is very inviting, and access up a steep path means this beach tends to be less crowded.

It’s the kind of beach where you can relax to the sound of waves and feel like you’ve escaped the world – ideal holiday material!

#3 Mellieħa Bay: Malta’s Largest Sandy Beach

Location: North Coast

Mellieħa Bay is Malta’s biggest and most family-friendly sandy beach – think shallow, golden sand and crystal-clear waters.

There are plenty of activities here – from windsurfing to paddle boarding and banana boating – otherwise, for those who want a more relaxed affair, bring a towel or pay for one of the sun loungers on offer.

While here, you’ll never be far from one of the many restaurants and cafes that serve traditional Maltese dishes

It’s worth staying later as this beach also has fantastic sunset views in the evening – don’t miss!

#4 Ġnejna Bay

Location: West Coast

Located on Malta’s picturesque western coastline, Ġnejna Bay is a local favourite thanks to its secluded position surrounded by cliffs.

The soft, golden sands and crystal-clear waters here make it an idyllic spot for a peaceful escape and, unsurprisingly, this beach remains a quieter alternative to its better-known neighbours.

Pro Tip: Bring your own snacks and drinks, as facilities here are minimal.

#5 Paradise Bay

Location: North Coast

Tucked near the Ċirkewwa ferry terminal, Paradise Bay truly lives up to its name.

This small, secluded beach is a favourite for its golden sands, crystal-clear waters, and relaxed vibe.

It’s a popular spot for swimming and snorkelling.

Surrounded by cliffs too, this beautiful bay is set within a picturesque natural cove, where stunning views of Comino and Gozo can be seen across the water.

Paradise Bay is a popular package holiday resort, so it can get very busy during the summer months.

Arrive early to get a good spot before the crowds descend.

#6 Qarraba Bay

Location: West Coast

Hidden away on Malta’s western coastline, Qarraba Bay is a secluded and unspoiled gem.

Accessible only by foot or boat, this stunning bay is again surrounded by beautiful cliffs, making it a quieter option – you won’t find many facilities or crowds here.

The perfect beach for a dip, Qarraba Bay has amazing crystal-clear waters ideal for swimming and snorkelling.

Tip: Wear sturdy shoes for the walk here. Once on the beach, it’s a mix of smooth pebbles and sandy patches.

#7 Armier and Little Armier Bay

Tucked away on Malta’s quieter northern side, this picturesque bay is actually divided into two sections: the larger Armier Bay and the smaller Little Armier, which are separated by a stretch of rocky coastline.

The beach has plenty of amenities, including sun loungers for hire, beachside kiosks serving snacks and drinks, and even water sports rentals during summer.

What About Beaches in Valletta, Malta?

Malta, Beaches, Swimmers

There are no beaches in Valletta, which means the capital isn’t the best place in Malta for coast-side reclining.

That said, there are some lovely swimming spots in and around Valletta.

Just across the Grand Harbour, Rinella Bay is a small sandy beach popular with families.

Otherwise, a short ferry ride will bring you to Sliema and Tigné Point, which both have sea platforms and ladders for swimming, including the lovely Fond Ghadir Beach where I enjoyed a dip.

St. Elmo Bay near the fort of the same name is also a popular swimming spot.

Amazing Beaches on Gozo Island

Gozo, Ramala Beach, Blue Sea

If you’re visiting Malta, a trip to the island of Gozo just can’t be missed.

Easily accessible from Malta by ferry, Gozo offers a calming escape with a slow-paced lifestyle and beautiful coastal scenery.

There are fewer sandy beaches on Gozo, but you can go hiking, diving, snorkelling, and spend the day at one of the hidden gems mentioned below.

The coastline is dotted with shingle bays, rocky swimming spots, and turquoise waters so clear they rival the Caribbean.

These beaches are rarely overcrowded, even during high season, so you’re never far from a quiet, wind-sheltered bay.

Here are the top beaches in Gozo:

#8 Ramla Beach

Location: North Coast

Ramla Bay is Gozo’s most famous sandy beach.

Known as the “Red Beach” thanks to its distinctive terracotta sand, this is a top choice for families, with plenty of space to spread out.

Shallow waters for young children, and amenities like sun loungers, a beachfront cafe, and an ice cream stand also make it very accessible.

This beach can get very crowded on hot days however, especially in the afternoon, so you might want to stick to an early morning visit before the day trippers arrive.

#9 San Blas Bay

Location: Northwest Coast

Another hidden gem, San Blas Bay, is much smaller than Ramla Bay.

Accessible via a steep path from the village of Nadur, this beach rewards those who make the effort to access it with golden-red sand and crystal-clear waters.

During the summer, a jeep service goes up and down to the beach, which can provide a good access option.

You can hire deckchairs, and there’s a small kiosk selling snacks and drinks here too.

#10 Hondoq ir-Rummien (Hondoq Bay)

Location: Southeast Coast

If you’re craving crystal-clear waters and a relaxed vibe, Hondoq Bay is the place to be.

This small but stunning bay, located below the village of Qala, is a local favourite and it’s not hard to see why.

The bay features soft white sand surrounded by rocky outcrops and the water is incredibly clear, making it a hotspot for snorkellers and kayakers.

Just across the water, you’ll have fantastic views of the island of Comino too.

The beach has a small snack bar, plus sun loungers, and umbrellas are available to rent.

#11 Mgarr ix-Xini Beach

Location: South Coast

Tucked away on Gozo’s southern coast near the village of Għajnsielem, Mgarr ix-Xini is a secluded beach loved by locals.

However, it’s become more popular recently due to it being one of the “By the Sea” filming locations starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.

Translated as “the galley’s landing place,” this small bay is set in a steep-sided gorge and is made up of soft pebbles, with crystal-clear waters perfect for snorkelling.

At the end of the hill, you’ll find a charming snack bar and restaurant—perfect for a post-swim bite.

In summer, sun loungers and umbrellas are available to rent.

There are also some small shops and a kayak rental kiosk.

#12 Marsalforn Bay

Location: North Coast

Situated in a traditional fishing village – a popular holiday destination just a 15-minute drive from the Gozo ferry terminal – this spot is also a favourite for families and beginner snorkellers too.

The beach itself is a mix of small sandy patches and flat rocks, ideal for sunbathing.

If you’re up for a bit more adventure, it’s also popular base for diving excursions.

What really sets Marsalforn apart, though, is its vibe.

The promenade is packed with restaurants and cafes serving fresh seafood and traditional Gozitan dishes – yum!

#13 Wied il-Għasri

Location: Northeast Coast

If you’re after dramatic views and peaceful vibes, Wied il-Għasri is calling your name.

Just 2km south of Għasri, this fjord-like inlet is a postcard-perfect escape for snorkelling, swimming and relaxing.

There’s also a big cave at the sea opening, popular with scuba divers.

Translating to “the Ghasri Valley,” the narrow gorge leads to a secluded pebbly beach surrounded by steep cliffs.

Getting here feels like an adventure itself—it’s accessible via steps carved into the cliffside.

A little tricky to spot from above, it’s well worth the effort.

In winter, take a walk and spot prickly pears and capers growing on the dry stone walls.

While the beach is idyllic on calm days, avoid it in rough weather as the sea can get wild here.

You’ll also want to come prepared—there are no facilities here—but shady rocks in the afternoon provide a cool escape from the heat.

Beaches on Comino Island

Gozo, Island, Views

Comino has a rocky coastline and not many beaches, but there are some hidden gems well worth exploring, like St. Nicholas Bay and Santa Maria Bay.

The jewel in the crown of the island, however, is the famous Blue Lagoon.

#14 Blue Lagoon

This world-famous spot boasts shimmering turquoise waters and a white sandy seabed, making it one of the most stunning swimming locations in the Mediterranean.

You can reach the Blue Lagoon by ferry or boat trip from Malta or Gozo, with plenty of tour companies offering round trips throughout the day, check out these top-rated options.

Several food boats offer snacks and drinks, but it’s still best to pack essentials.

Other Malta Beaches Worth a Mention

Malta, Sea, Swimmers

Dwejra Bay: While the Azure Window may be gone, Dwejra Bay remains one of Gozo’s most beautiful spots. The rock pools here are perfect for a refreshing dip, and the bay is a favourite among divers, thanks to its caves and iconic Blue Hole.

Blue Hole Gozo: A popular swimming, snorkelling and diving spot. You can also view Blue Hole from one of the hiking trails above and see how it resembles an eye. Learn more in this guide I wrote about visiting it.

Buġibba Perched Beach: A convenient spot for a quick swim in Malta. Rather than a beach, it’s an elevated platform with easy access to the sea.

St. Peter’s Pool: A natural swimming pool near Marsaxlokk in Malta, known for its clear waters and perfect conditions for snorkelling and cliff jumping. It’s off the beaten path and feels like a hidden gem.

Tips for Visiting the Gozo, Comino and Malta Beaches

Malta, Ocean, Sunset

  • Lots of the beaches have marked swimming zones with buoys. Always stay within these zones for safety.
  • If the forecast predicts strong winds, consider skipping exposed beaches, as the sea can get rough.
  • If you plan to rent umbrellas, sun loungers, or equipment like snorkels, note that many sellers only accept cash, so bring some with you.
  • Many beaches use a flag system to indicate sea conditions. A green flag means it’s safe to swim, yellow indicates caution, and a red flag means swimming is prohibited.
  • Some beaches, like those with pebble or rocky ground, can be tough on bare feet. Water/ Aqua Shoes make walking and swimming much more comfortable.
  • Popular beaches can get busy in summer, especially during midday. Arrive early or visit in the late afternoon for a quieter experience.
  • Don’t limit yourself to just the big-name beaches. There are plenty of secluded bays and hidden coves that are perfect for a peaceful escape. Locals often have the best tips on where to go!
