Montenegro

A ticked away gem, often dwarfed by its mainstream neighbour Croatia, Montenegro, however, should not be overlooked.

Boasting beautiful Adriatic coastline and some amazing national parks inland like Durmitor, this cheap and intrepid destinationsboasts many of the best parts of the Baltics – warm people, beautiful beaches, epic food and stunning natural landscapes.

For once the capital of this country, Podgroica, is not a main player in the country’s tourism offering, so I’d definitely spend most of your time on the coast instead, at beautiful towns like Kotor, Budva, Perast, Sveti Stefan, Ulcinj and Herceg Novi.

With plenty of opportunities to relax, as well as enjoy active adventures like SUP-ing, kayaking, cycling and hiking, these small places have plenty to offer.

If you’re looking to get to the Montenegro coastline, then Dubrovnik in Croatia is just a hop skip and a jump away too and, with regular flights landing there from across Europe, it’s easy to then hop across the border on a bus or transfer.

And the best time to do this?

Summer of course!
