Tips for Getting the Best Experience
Sit Outside when Leaving Bergen
The departure through Bergen harbour provides fantastic views back towards Bryggen and the surrounding mountains.
Do make sure your inside seats are also reserved however.
Bring an Extra Layer
Even during summer, it can feel surprisingly chilly once the boat picks up speed.
A lightweight waterproof jacket is ideal.
Charge your Camera
You’ll probably take far more photographs than you expect.
Waterfalls, reflections and dramatic mountain scenery appear around almost every bend.
A portable phone charger is a great item to have with you in Norway.
Arrive Early
Boarding the cruise is straightforward, but arriving 20 to 30 minutes before departure allows you to choose your preferred seats and is highly recommended.
I don’t think there’s any better side (i.e. left or right of the boat) when it comes to know where to sit.
I do recommend you get a window seat however – these give much better views than the middle seat clusters.
Book in Advance
Summer departures regularly sell out, particularly during cruise ship season.
Booking online ahead of time gives you the widest choice of departure times.
What is the Best Departure Time?
Rødne operates multiple daily departures throughout the main tourist season, typically at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00 during July and August, with fewer sailings in spring, autumn and winter.
Timetables vary slightly depending on the season, so it’s always worth checking the latest schedule before booking.
If you have the choice, I’d recommend booking the 10:00 departure.
The morning sailing is usually a little quieter than later departures, giving you more space on the outdoor decks for photographs.
The softer morning light is also ideal for capturing the waterfalls and dramatic cliffs, especially during summer when the sun sits higher later in the day.
Best of all, you’ll be back in Bergen by early afternoon, leaving plenty of time to explore Bryggen, ride the Fløibanen funicular or enjoy lunch at the Fish Market.
The 14:00 departure is another good option if you want a relaxed morning exploring the city first, while the additional midday sailing available during peak summer offers extra flexibility for busy itineraries.

For many travellers, yes.
