Malawi

Known as the Warm Heart of Africa, Malawi straddles the border between east and southern Africa.

Landlocked, it does however have an amazing body of water – Lake Malawi – which is actually a fresh water lake, home to more species of fish than anywhere else in the world!

This huge lake is the country’s main attraction and actually stretches into Tanzania and Mozambique too.

An African Great Lake, and now protected with National Park status, Lake Malawi is the 5th largest fresh water lake in the world by volume and the 9th largest lake in the world by area.

It is also the 3rd largest and 2nd deepest lake in Africa.

Most travellers to Malawi head for and base themselves around the lake, where you can enjoy freshwater scuba diving, ferry rides, sailing, snorkelling and fishing.

Every October, the Lake of Stars music festival takes place here too – a must-see if you’re visiting at this time.

Outside of this festival, the Lake is a lovely peaceful spot and the hills around also offer great activities including hiking and village visits, as well as some great quirky accommodation options.

The other best place to head for in Malawi is the Liwonde National Park, where you can watch herds of elephants and hippos in one of the regions least visited reserves.

The best time to visit this park and the lake is during the country’s dry season, which runs from the month of May through to October.
