Lake Como has a funny habit of looking like a billionaire’s screensaver. All glossy water, perfectly stacked villages, and mountains doing their best dramatic backdrop impression.
The good news is you do not need a private driver, a five-star hotel, or a suspiciously expensive gelato to enjoy it.
A day trip from Milan is one of the best ways to see Lake Como on a budget because you can get there fast by direct regional train, base yourself in a walkable lakeside town, and use public ferries to hop between the prettiest spots in the centre of the lake.
Lake Como is shaped like an upside-down Y.
For a day trip, the best-value area is the central lake, where ferries connect the headline towns quickly.
This guide focuses on the classic, excellent value route: Milan to Varenna by train, then a ferry triangle day visiting Bellagio and Menaggio, finishing with Villa Monastero back in Varenna before returning to Milan.

Why Day Tripping to Como From Milan is a Great Budget Option
First, the maths.
A day trip means no accommodation costs in Como. Lake Como hotels can be stunning, but they can also be eye-watering, especially in peak season.
Second, the logistics are genuinely easy.
Trenord is the operator that runs direct trains from Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino roughly hourly, with a journey time between 54 and 65 minutes.
A standard 2nd class single ticket starts from 7.40€.
Third, you get maximum scenery per euro.
Varenna is compact, gorgeous, and sits right on the ferry network, so you can spend your money on experiences rather than taxis and transfers.
Finally, it is flexible.
You can keep it cheap with scenic strolls, viewpoints, free churches, and lakeside promenades, then choose one paid highlight like Villa Monastero’s botanical gardens to explore at Lake Como.
How to Get to Lake Como from Milan: Step by Step
Best Departure Station in Milan
Use Milano Centrale.
It is Milan’s main railway station, well connected by Metro (M2 and M3), and it is the standard departure point for direct services to Varenna-Esino on Trenord.
Best Arrival Station at the Lake: Varenna, Not Como!
Aim for Varenna-Esino (often shown as Varenna-Esino-Perledo).
For a Milan day trip therefore, Varenna-Esino is the sweet spot to arrive at because it is…
- Reachable by direct train from Milano Centrale
- A short walk from station to waterfront
- Connected by ferry to Bellagio and Menaggio (the classic Como triangle)
Varenna is the actual lakeside village you want to visit.
Varenna-Esino is the official name of the railway station. The “Esino” part refers to Esino Lario, a mountain village inland.
When booking train tickets, you should always select Varenna-Esino as your destination.
Although Como S.Giovanni station is closer to Milan, Como town itself is not where most people imagine when they picture Lake Como.
The town feels more like a busy regional hub, with wider roads, urban architecture, and a working port atmosphere, rather than the classic stacked villages and dramatic lakeside views.
To reach the most photogenic parts of the lake from Como town, you still need to take a ferry or bus north, which quickly eats into both your time and budget.
Varenna, by contrast, delivers instant scenery as soon as you arrive, with colourful houses, narrow lanes, and mountain-backed lake views all within a short walk of the station.
For a one day visit, Varenna simply gives you more of the iconic Lake Como experience for less effort and cost and is my recommendation for a train arrival from Milan.
Train Times, Frequency, Journey Length
The key facts to know about the Trenord journey from Milan to Varenna are…
- Duration: 54 – 65 minutes
- Frequency: roughly 1 train every 60 minutes
- First Train: around 06:20
- Last Train: around 21:20
- About 16 daily trains (varies by day)
For day tripping, a practical target is an early-ish departure that gets you into Varenna before 9am so you can ferry-hop and sightsee without rushing.
Train Tickets: Costs & Where to Buy
2nd class single tickets from Milan Centrale to Varenna-Esino start from just 7.40€.
You can buy tickets via…
Pricing is generally fixed on regional services like the Trenord journey from Milan to Varenna, so there is usually less “dynamic pricing drama” than on Italian high-speed trains.
Still, buy ahead if you want peace of mind, and always check the live timetable close to travel.
Regional trains between Milan and Varenna do not require seat reservations and most of the carriages are open seating.
Because of this, they are very unlikely to sell out completely, especially on a weekday or outside peak holiday periods.
That said, there are a few practical points to know…
- If you travel during very busy times such as summer weekends, holidays like Ferragosto, or mornings when commuters are also using the trains, it can feel crowded and you might have trouble finding a seat
- Regional trains can be hit-and-miss, with crowding after big events or during school holiday travel times in Italy
- Trenord tickets are usually not checked by seat number
- Once the train fills up, you have to stand if all seats are taken
How to Use Lake Como Ferries
Once you’ve arrived at Varenna, it’s time to head down to the ferry port to grab a boat to explore the central lake area.
It is typically around a 10 to 15 minute downhill walk from Varenna-Esino station to the lakeside promenade and ferry ticket points.
Wear shoes you trust, especially if it has rained.
Public ferry and boat services on Lake Como are run by Navigazione Laghi, which publishes official timetables and lets you book tickets online.
Which Ferry Routes Are Best For This Day Trip
For the classic Como triangle, I suggest the following ferry tickets…
- Varenna to Bellagio
- Bellagio to Menaggio
- Menaggio to Varenna
Seeing these 3 towns is more than enough for 1 day trip!
How to Buy Lake Como Ferry Tickets
The best options for buying Lake Como ferry tickets are…
- Online purchases via the Navigazione Laghi website – RECOMMENDED
- In-person at the ticket offices at the main docks i.e. Varenna
- Contactless systems on-board in some cases
I recommend booking your ferry tickets in advance via the Navigazione Laghi website to save long queues and big wait times, which can eat into your day trip.
If tickets have sold out online, you can still sometimes buy them in person on the day at the port ticket office.
Navigazione Laghi’s NaviTap system also allows you to purchase a daily ticket by tapping a contactless payment card, or NFC device, on-board, without stopping at the ticket office.
But, of course, you have to get onto the ferry first!
What Ferry Tickets to Buy
On the Navigazione Laghi website, under the Lake Como section > Buy Tickets, you will need to enter…
- Your points of departure and arrival
- Your date of travel
- Your time of travel
- Whether you want round-trip or one-way
You will then see the following ticket options…
- Single (one-way) tickets for a specific route (starting from 4.60€ in 2026)
- Return tickets (starting from 9.20€ in 2026)
- One Day Pass or “free circulation tickets”, which allow intermediate stops until you return to the original port (starting from 15€ in 2026)
Best Budget Buys:
- Single tickets may offer the best value if you’re making 3 ferry journeys on your day trip i.e. Varenna to Bellagio, Bellagio to Menaggio and Menaggio back to Varenna (costs are 13.80€ in 2026)
- Return journeys are only helpful if you’re wanting to visit just 2 lake towns i.e. just Varenna and Bellagio (starting from 9.20€ in 2026)
- One Day Pass or “free circulation tickets” are best for flexibility as they allow unlimited stops along the ferry route until you return to the original port, and aren’t that must pricier than 3x singles (cost is 15€ in 2026)
Because prices and ticket types can vary by route and season, use the Navigazione Laghi to confirm the cheapest ticket strategy for your exact plan.
Difference Between Varenna & Varenna Traghetto
This is another Lake Como naming quirk that can be confusing when trying to book ferry tickets online.
Varenna refers to the village itself and the main ferry port for passenger boats on Lake Como.
This is where you arrive if you are travelling on standard ferries or fast boats, and it is the stop closest to the old town, Villa Monastero, and the waterfront promenade.
Varenna Traghetto specifically refers to the car ferry terminal.
Usually it involves a slower crossing on ferries that are less frequent.
In Lake Como specifically, it indicates the vehicle ferry crossing point, particularly the short shuttle route between Varenna, Bellagio, and Menaggio that carries cars as well as foot passengers.
For day trippers on foot, you can use either the Varenna or Varenna Traghetto terminals, but I recommend the former for faster and more frequent crossings.
How Long Do the Ferry Crossings Take?
Crossings in the central area of the lake are short.
For example, Bellagio to Varenna is commonly around 15 minutes by ferry.
There’s no need to buy fast ferry tickets, the regular service is ample.
Ferries run fairly frequently, but in busy seasons, you’ll need to arrive at the port at least 15 minutes before departure to make sure you can board the boat – they do fill up and leave passengers behind.
As such, it makes sense to plan the stops on your Lake Como day trip in advance.
Base this on the seasonal ferry timetables available on Navigazione Laghi’s website.
Best Como Day Trip Itinerary
This itinerary is designed to minimise backtracking and maximise lake views per minute for the best budget Lake Como day.
| Time Block | Plan | Why It Works For Budget Travel |
| 07:30 to 09:00 | Train Milan to Varenna | Cheap, fast, no driving costs |
| 09:00 to 10:30 | Explore Varenna Old Town + lakeside walk | Free scenery, peak “Como vibes” early |
| 10:30 to 12:30 | Ferry to Bellagio + explore | One ferry hop, big payoff views |
| 12:30 to 14:30 | Ferry to Menaggio + lunch + promenade | Often better value lunch options than Bellagio |
| 14:30 to 16:30 | Ferry back to Varenna + Villa Monastero gardens | Your paid highlight, timed for softer light |
| 17:00 to 18:30 | Aperitivo or gelato + train back to Milan | Finish relaxed, not sprinting |
Times are intentionally flexible because ferry schedules vary by season.
Stop 1: Varenna in the Morning
Varenna is the kind of place that makes you slow down without asking permission.
Free and low-cost things to do there first include…
- Wander the old lanes above the waterfront
- Stroll the lakeside promenade for classic views
- Pop into a church if one is open (quiet, cool, and usually free)
- Grab a pastry and coffee standing at the bar, Italian-style, which is often cheaper than table service
Budget Tip: If you plan to picnic, Milan supermarkets are usually better value than lakeside mini-markets, so pack a sandwich, a bag of nuts / crips and a piece of fruit before you leave Milan and you will feel smug later.
Also a Water-to-Go bottle is great, because it will allow you to safely drink fresh water from any source – reducing your need to pay for water.
Stop 2: Bellagio Without Spending a Fortune
Bellagio is famous for a reason – it sits right at the central fork of the lake, so the views are showy from nearly every angle.
How to do Bellagio on a budget…
- Focus on viewpoints and wandering rather than shopping
- Take photos early or late, when day-trippers thin out
- Choose 1 treat, not 5. Your wallet is not a bottomless lake
If you want a simple plan, do a loop – waterfront first, then climb into the lanes, then drift back down for the ferry.
Stop 3: Menaggio for a More Relaxed Midday
Menaggio often feels a touch less frantic than Bellagio, which is handy when you want to sit down, eat, and watch the lake do its thing.
Cheap and cheerful options to do there include…
- Lakeside promenade stroll
- Find a bench for your picnic
- Order a panino or slice of pizza rather than a full sit-down meal
Stop 4: Villa Monastero: Best-Value Paid Garden Stop
If you do one paid attraction on this day trip, make it Villa Monastero’s botanical gardens.
It’s definitely worth it because…
- It is right in Varenna, so you avoid extra transport costs
- It is an iconic lakeside garden experience with big views
- You can visit at the end of your day trip and keep the rest of your itinerary mostly free
Ticket Prices + How to Buy
Again I recommend buying tickets in advance to save time on your precious day trip.
Buying ticket ahead of time allows you to skip the line when you arrive at Villa Monastero.
Ticket prices online are as follows…
- Botanical garden only: 10€ full price – RECOMMENDED
- Botanical garden + house museum: 13€ full price
- Reduced prices for certain groups, and free entry for children 0 to 14 years
Budget Tip: If you care more about views and planting than interiors, the garden-only ticket is the best value.

Budget Travel Tips that Make Lake Como Easier
Go Early or Go Slightly Off-Season
Summer is stunning at lake Como, but it is also busy and often pricier.
Shoulder months can mean lower costs and fewer queues.
I visited in April and loved it!
Ferries still run, but timetables can be reduced, so always check the official seasonal schedule.
Avoid Paying for Unnecessary Upgrades
You do not need a private boat tour to enjoy the lake.
Public ferries deliver the views for a fraction of the cost, and they are part of daily life on the lake.
Fast ferries aren’t necessary for foot passengers on day trippers.
Keep a Tight Grip on Timings
Ensure you know when the last ferry and train of the day are.
Getting stuck at Lake Como will quickly spiral your budget!
Check Trenord and Navigazione Laghi websites for the first and last train / ferry times of the day.
A calm day trip is always cheaper than a last-minute taxi rescue or overnight stay!
Quick Day Trip Planning Checklist
- Start at Milano Centrale
- Take the direct Trenord train to Varenna-Esino
- Explore Varenna first, then ferry to Bellagio, then ferry to Menaggio, then ferry back to Varenna
- Use Navigazione Laghi for official ferry timetables and ticket
- Choose Villa Monastero garden-only tickets (10€) or gardens + museum (13€) to wrap up your day
