Lithuania

The charming, tiny nation of Lithuania, the southernmost of the Baltic states, is a destination few British travellers visit, but which many should!

With medieval charm, natural beauty and vibrant culture, not to mention amazing wellness opportunities and one of the few European capital cities where hot air balloon flights are permitted over its Old Town, whether you’re seeking cobblestone streets, serene forests, or relaxing spa retreats, Lithuania is a hit!

It’s best to start your journey, as I did, in capital Vilnius, known for its baroque Old Town – one of the largest in Europe.

Wander past Gothic churches, quirky street art, and hidden courtyards, then climb Gediminas’ Tower for panoramic views of the city.

History lovers shouldn’t miss the former Jewish district, while foodies will enjoy Lithuania’s unique pink soup!

If you’re craving rest and rejuvenation, I’d then suggest heading to either Druskininkai or Birštonas (or both!), two renowned spa towns offering natural mineral waters, therapeutic mud treatments, and forested walking trails.

These destinations are perfect for unwinding and connecting with Lithuania’s peaceful forest landscapes.

Don’t miss the mystical Hill of Crosses in Šiauliai, or Trakai Castle, a fairy-tale fortress floating on an island near Vilnius, either.

Nature lovers will enjoy the Curonian Spit, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of sand dunes and pine forests stretching along the coast.

The best time to visit Lithuania is from May to September, when the weather is mild and the countryside comes alive with festivals, lakeside activities, and open-air markets.

Autumn (late September to October) is also magical, with golden foliage transforming Lithuania’s national parks and woodlands into breathtaking landscapes.

Lithuania is small but rich in culture, history, and charm.

Whether you’re exploring its lively cities, tranquil spa towns, or wild landscapes, this Baltic gem is full of unforgettable experiences.
